Falsework

Mark Halliday was commissioned by Station Gallery in Bristol to create a site specific sculpture during the summer of 2005.  Taking his interest in Nicolas Hawksmoor’s radical 18th Century solution to correct the subsiding front of Beverley Minster in Yorkshire, Halliday created his own version of the structure and used it to support a large scale plaster cast of the front of Station Gallery.  Hawksmoor had built a massive wooden structure specifically designed to ‘jack up’ the leaning front of the Minster and slowly pull it vertical again.

Halliday initially began by making a cast of the front of Station Gallery, working in smaller pieces to enable the cast to be removed from the building.

The work engendered a good deal of interest both from public and press on the quayside during its month long creation, as well as during the period of exhibition.
